A little of Lexington and a lot of Boston
This is the perfect season to be on the road….God’s beauty overwhelms me everyday while we drive! After a year of summer and growing up with the non-changing seasons of Florida, I am like a kid in a candy shop with Fall all around me. A friend recently explained it as God going at it with a paint brush and I couldn’t agree more. Our God knows how to share His beauty with us through His creation.
So you might be wondering where I have been after Ohio if you are not following me on facebook or twitter (which you should be). Jessie and I spent the weekend before last in Lexington, KY. We stayed with Casondra Radford who will be going on the January 2010 World Race. Her family welcomed us in their home from the 1st minute we were there. I love good ole hospitality. We were able to go to worship at her home church where her father is the pastor. There is no lack of love in that congregation or heart felt preaching. We had a delicious lunch of pot roast and good conversation about how God transformed us on the race and how Casondra will be transformed. God is the heart beat of that home and we encountered Him while we were there. That evening we set up a table at Southland Church, the 608 service which is more for college students or young adults. We handed out fliers about the world race and were able to have a few good conversations with people who might be interested. For the most part it seemed like most of the people there already knew about the race because of past and future racers who attend the service. But the world race word was spread even more! We closed our time in KY praying over John Blair (Jan 2010 world racer) and Casondra. God gave us some encouraging words and pictures to share with them. There passion encouraged us I think more than we were able to encourage them. They are at training camp this week with the rest of their squad so please remember them in your prayers!
After the quick trip to KY we went back to Columbus for a few days before the some what long drive to Boston. Let me start by saying Boston is a great city. There are some beautiful sights and after a week of traveling around on the T, I feel like I saw all the ins and outs of the city. Boston is a very intellectual city, it has to be with so many universities there. I felt like I was a phony walking all around the different campuses trying to ‘blend in’. We didn’t do a very good job at Harvard though because I did hear some kids behind us making fun of all our photo snapping. Hey, it was my 1st time on an ivy league campus who cares if I looked like a nerd!
While we were there we volunteered at Boston Rescue Mission a couple of times. We fell in love with that place within the 1st ten minutes. We worked all day in the kitchen and had a blast. Billy, the guy running the kitchen prepared a feast! They serve 7 meals a day so there was always something to do. The mission also has a live in program that addicts go through to get clean. We had so many good conversations with some of the people while we were there. They were raw and honest about how rough their lives have been. I had many different conversations with people who grew up on the streets and learned how to be a drug dealer or alcoholic from their parents. I was surprised at how real and honest they were but they had nothing to hide at this point. The past is just that and they were starting a new life there at the Boston Rescue Mission. If I am ever in Boston again I will be back to serve there and I highly recommend that you do the same if you travel through the city!
We also set up a table at two different churches while in Boston. One was at a Campus Crusade ministry called Real Life Boston. The other was at the church service for people in their 20’s at Park Street Church. Again we had some awesome conversations with people who were interested in missions. I love spreading the word about a mission trip I truly endorse. The World Race is so much more than your average mission trip. It is like a typical mission trip on steroids. It is an intense look at God’s Kingdom all over the world and recognizing the greatness you were created for. I think this is the perfect movement for our generation to join. This is just one of the reasons Jessie and I are traveling around the US, trying to rise up our generation to become radicals!
Rise up Boston!
We have only just started this journey and been to a few of the cities on our tour schedule but I know without a doubt that this is exactly where I am supposed to be right now. One conversation at a time we are seeing people be encouraged and recognize that they were made for more than just an ordinary, nothing special life. They were made to shine for the Kingdom. They were made to be bold and courageous for our Lord. They were created for a purpose and it is time they seek God to find out what that purpose is. I know God is putting people in our path that He is asking us to pray and speak life over, that never gets old!
Let me just end with the beloved phrase from the July 2009 World Race…I LOVE my life!
It was a pleasure having you with our family. We all loved you and miss you. Thanks for your encouragement. God is doing great things through you and I am excited that he allowed you to come across my path. You are amazingly wonderful and I’m blessed to call you my friend!
